It’s hard to believe, but Del and I just celebrated our 12th wedding anniversary. Del’s aunt agreed to take the kids so we could actually go out and have some alone time. We went out to dinner and then saw Couples Retreat, which was a lot better than I expected it to be. The scene they show in the previews with the little boy and the toilet at the home improvement store had me reeling. I laughed so hard I started crying!
We usually follow the traditional and modern gift ideas because we like to see how creative we can be with our gifts. Traditional for a 12th anniversary is either silk or linen. Modern ranges from pearls to colored gems. Del needed some new dress shirts, so I decided to get him some nice silk shirts. Tommy Bahama has some 100% silk shirts without Hawaiian prints on them, so I bought him some of those, even though they were WAY out of my price range. I figured that since this was an anniversary present, Del deserved better than the $9.99 knock off being sold at a less expensive store. He ended up really liking the shirts, and they fit him perfectly.
As for my gift from Del, let’s just say he stuck to the list, too — the modern list! He got me the most beautiful pair of diamond stud earrings I have ever seen. I know — technically, the gems are supposed to be colored – but these are so shiny, they catch all the colors when you look at them. He tried to be tricky about giving them to me. He wrapped the gift box up inside of a sweater that he gave me (which was also quite nice, I might add. I would have been happy with the sweater alone.) Part of the reason I was so excited about the earrings is that Del had given me a pair before, but I lost one of them. I have been wanting another pair ever since, but it was my fault I lost the earring to the set, so I didn’t feel I deserved another pair (especially since that pair was a replacement pair).
It was one of the best anniversaries I’ve ever had. As Del likes to say, 12 years down, a lifetime to go.
