Product Review: Diaper Champ

In the interest of my brother, who is on his journey to becoming a first time daddy, I decided to write about my experience with diaper disposal units.  When Felicity was a baby, I used a Diaper Genie, which was all the rage at the time.  I found it to be somewhat cumbersome and expensive to maintain.  One thing that new parents don’t sometimes realize is the total cost of raising a baby.  When you purchase a unit like this, at first it sounds great, but when you start shelling out an extra $7 for a refill that lasts for a week, the costs add up quickly.  After a month, you’ve spent enough money on refills to buy a big box of diapers at Costco.

I first hear of the Diaper Champ when a friend of mine registered for it.  I was so impressed with the product that I purchased it for my friend, and later on, when I got pregnant with Chase, I registered for one of my own.

The Diaper Champ is easy to use and requires little effort to maintain.  You simply place a dirty diaper inside the Diaper Champ and flip the handle from one side to the other.  The diaper drops inside and, viola!  What I like the most about it is that you can use your own trash bags, or if you want to save more money, the plastic bags you get at the grocery store.  You don’t need to buy anything else for it.  It’s easy to change the bags ( just be careful if you’ve got long fingernails), and it’s secure enough not to open if a pet knocks it over.  I would just make sure to spray the inside with Lysol or some other disinfectant to keep odors at bay, but other than that, it works great.

I’ve used mine with two of my kids and it works just as good as the day we bought it.  I’ve never had any complaints about it.  I liked it so much that I gave my sister one when she was expecting.

Of course, there are other units out there that probably work just as well  The Diaper Champ is competitively priced and has been worth every penny to me.  I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a diaper disposal unit.

I love this product. It saves money over the others with there refills.

  • I'm a mommy too!

Wow! There are lots of disposable diapers and diaper pails. What a nice convenience.

The Diaper Champ sounds really good. If my kids were small I’d probably use it.

My children are all grown up now and unfortunately they just came out with the first disposable diapers…Pampers..but they were so expensive, I couldn’t afford them.

So, needless to say, all 3 of my kids had cloth diapers and a giant bucket filled with Clorox water. The pee-pee diapers could be put right in the bucket, but the poopy ones had to be rinsed in the toilet…yuk!!

I didn’t even have a dryer then so I had to hang them on the clothes line. In the winter, the diapers would be frozen on the clothes line!!!

    Oh those were the days!!!

I was wondering if you can use cloth diapers with the Diaper Champ. I, too, have heard mixed reviews and the expense of the Diaper Genie. When I went to register, the manager recommended Diaper Dekor as the best for pet protection and cloth diaper usage. It can use plain trash bags too. That’s why I put the Dekor on my registry. But if the Champ will work for cloth diapers than I might make the change.

  • Hi, Rose!

I believe the Diaper Champ works best for disposable diapers. A reviewer at Epinions.com stated that they did use the Diaper Champ for cloth diapers, but they would sometimes get caught in the chute and soil the chute. Baby Trend’s manual for the Diaper Champ doesn’t make any mention about cloth diapers. If you mainly plan to use cloth diapers, you might want to keep your original choice.

While I don’t have any personal experience with Diaper Dekor, I did see that their refills can be pretty costly. I didn’t see anything in their online manual that said you could use regular trash bags, so I can’t really comment on that. You might want to go to the store and look inside a Diaper Dekor to see how you would place a regular trash bag inside. I will say, though, that when Consumer Reports compared the Diaper Champ, Diaper Dekor, and Diaper Genie (and Diaper Genie II), they recommended the Diaper Champ.

I guess it would come down to what was more important to you, using cloth diapers or cost. Good luck with your choice and with your upcoming event!

I agree with you. I absolutely LOVE my diaper champ! With my first child, I had another diaper pail, and it did not contain the pleasant odors that are left behind. I love the fact that it does use regular trash bags. No one fully prepares you for all for all of the expenses that incur with a baby until you actually have one, so the money not spent on refill bags do add up. My concern was with the smell. Upon using the Diaper Champ, I have had no complaints. My husband is really big on this. It totally disgusts him and he can walk past the Diaper Champ and not even realize that I had just put a really dirty and stinky diaper in it! This in my household is a really big plus. I have recommended it to other expectant moms as well. Two thumbs up:-)
